Referrals occur for example.com even though the server is supposed to be its soa

Hello,
   
  I have an installation of 1.5.9.5 on a recent Gentoo distro.   The server is working fine but when I query for example.com I get "No Objects Found".
   
  I ran the indexer again on the soa records as well with the same result.
   
  On Startup I see...
