The most reproducible problem was that I couldn't get it (1.5.9.x) to
*not* send a referral link on queries it was supposedly authoritative
for. (As a side issue, it may also be just that the client was
following the link anyway when it had been told not to.) Of course, now
that I'm trying to reproduce this directly, I can't make it fail...
The closest analogy I can think of is configuring BIND to be
authoritative for foo.com, and then having it bounce a query to the root
servers to find out who's supposedly authoritative for foo.com - even
though I've specifically queried the system that is supposedly set up to
*be* that authoritative system.
I'm certain there was something else I saw behaving inconsistently about
a year and a half ago, but I haven't seen anything recently beyond my
own accidental misconfigurations.
