though i have installed some of icann registrar whois servers, i've never
used ldap for a production whois service backend. thought about it, yes,
and even tested out the ideas. to the best of my knowlege i do not know of
one LDAP backened whois service in production; this isn't to say one does
not exist -- but that the industry has not accepted the idea.
most of the new backend systems for servicing the :43 and :80 whois
requests are built on SQL and OORDBMS database systems.
