FYI, Gandi::WhoisExtract [1] does the same thing, except the parse is not
so generic (but that could be easily achieved), and it does not use
XML-RPC (whish should also be very easy to use). 
However it correctly parses around 80 (IIRC) Registrars under
.com/.net/.org (which does not seem to be the case of dowhois)
It is production quality code and really used. Available under a BSD
licence. Done in Perl OO.

However I really think that this WG has a far bigger aim than parsing
whois and stuff like that.
XML-RPC can be an idea as for the transport, but other than that...
